So here is another image made on the National Mall on 'Independence Day' while waiting in the fading light for the fireworks. Hundreds of thousands had gathered a true cross section of America. My eye fell on these Muslim Americans seated expectantly with all the others. This woman was certainly not alone in wearing the hijab. Behind you see the colossal statue of Lincoln. His assassination in 1865 by a 'Southern Secessionist' was the first of a President in U.S. history and made him 'a martyr for the ideal of national unity'. He might be gratified to see today how far the ideals and the draw of this 'one nation in unity and liberty' have spread.
