My friend on facebook Sassi Z has been openly musing about going to Croatia.......... asking if I would go there or Russia....... hmmmmmmm???? They both can be a little tricky......... but both are certainly worth a trip.........

Mind you last time I was in Croatia things were really tough......... I know its pulled out of those serious lows........ but its hard to push some of the grim stuff out when I think of Croatia............ but even through the worse of times the coast was always amazing........ clearly just fantastic natural beauty........ and Split was a great place to come back to for R and R ...........

The hotel Split was a classic journalist hotel filled with international journalists......... United Nations People....... other NGO's ......... the odd mercenary....... some mafia types....... and the odd spook............. the UN vehicles were always spotless and white ......... the journalists vehicles were filthy and wrecked......... clearly the journalists vehicles spent a lot more time 'Up Country' and a lot less time in the car park of the hotel Split :-/ :-))

I shot this picture early in the break up of Yugoslavia in the days after the Croat declaration of independence. This is in Osijeck Croatia, this Catholic Church on the edge of town had been hit by shelling. The Croat soldier is checking for hidden Serbian snipers. In the end the town of Osijeck was almost entirely destroyed by shelling.
