Hey you know how it is........ the arrival of a law officer is not always hailed as a fantastic thing...... especially if you are driving in Virginia or photographing oil stuff in Louisiana ........ but sometimes especially if you are stumbling around in the dark in potentially dangerous territory........ hey you just might be very glad to see one......... especially one as nice as Rick S who seems to really like Brits and have a brother who is a photographer........ a combination I would certainly like to see repeated in all law officers everywhere ....... hehehehe.......... :-))

I had been photographing the border fence walking in the scrubby rough land that leads down to the sea in the late afternoon light. I had watched the sun go down over the ocean and watched and photographed things happening on the Mexican side of the fence.

I wasn't completely sure I was allowed to get this close to the US side of the fence. I think technically you are not. I think its possible you could be deemed to be trespassing on federal property. Anyway the border Patrol seemed pretty relaxed about this so I had spent a good few hours fairly close to it.

It was a good couple of miles back to my car. I knew it would be nutz to let it get dark then attempt to get back across this barren place with all its small ravines and scrubby bushes and maze of tracks...... and yet...... and yet..... As the light went down and the tungsten/sodium lights came on..... It was clear as the night drew in the images would be more dramatic..........

I had a sense of Deja Vu ........ I remember photographing the Tennyson Memorial on the cliffs at the Isle of White till darkness fell......... leaving me in the dark to negotiate my way off the cliff tops in darkness......... there I had I stayed till the last shred of light was gone........ Yeah I know..... nutz.

So I was doing it again...... the pictures would be best just before proper darkness fell ....... Leaving me only proper darkness to try and get back in. Of course this area is notorious for vicious armed criminal smuggling gangs to operate in...... never mind snakes and other critters...... it was madness to be out here especially at night........

So I was pretty glad to see Rick's vehicle approaching (well I was still vaguely worried i might yet get arrested but this passed immediately)....... as you see in the above image Rick is driving the perimeter road right by the fence.... I shot this as he approached just before he pulled over to speak to me ......... he stopped and told me it really was seriously unsafe to out here at night and offered to wait while I finished shooting then give me a ride back to my car............ music to my ears......... what a great bloke he is........... I shot a few more pics then jumped up into his SUV...... we chatted photography and other stuff as he expertly drove the 4 wheel drive over the rough terrain and brought me back to my rental vehicle.

What a fine bloke...... what a stroke of luck....... :-))
