I was shocked to see of the tragic news from the Big Branch Mine today in West Virginia. An explosion has killed 6 miners and a further 21 are still unaccounted for in the underground mine as I write.
Matt and I were there last year to photograph the facility that handles the coal and loads it to trains after it is brought up from that mine.
I know from personal experience this company and these miners strive for safety above everything, so it really is shocking news.
Having spent time with many West Virginia Miners I have some idea how a disaster like this will strike the community.
I am deeply saddened to think of these miners and their families. I do feel an affinity to the miners and their communities having visited numerous West Virginia mines over a period of years now.
I would like to offer my sincerest condolences to the whole community and especially to the families of the men who are known to have died already and just to say my hopes and prayers are with the men still missing tonight.
