I was shooting in NYC today until 9-00PM and then later I met up with Jon for a beer and a bite. Jon Jones (www.jonjonesphoto.com) is me old mate from tricky assignments all over the world and is a mega photojournalist. He is in NYC to edit a book. He told me Alexandra Boulat is dead. I had no idea.
Her funeral is on Friday in Paris. Jon is going to fly back for it. I was not that close to her, but liked her, respected her work, and had been around her for years on the road in the past, knew many of her friends, but sadly without ever really knowing her that well. Jon and his wife Lou knew her very well. The ironic thing is she survived her career as a war photographer only to die of a brain aneurism at the age of 45.
I was looking to see if I had a picture of her but couldn't see one. In the end I put up this image of a Croat soldier weeping at the funeral of a fellow fighter and friend in Osijek during the war between the Serbs and the Croats in the early 90's. I first met Alexandra back then in those Balkans wars.

Condolences to her friends and family and partner Issa Freij.... she had only just moved in with him.......... just so sad.
Cheers Jez XX
