Farewell to Sir David Manning : British Embassy : DC

So last night I went to the leaving party for Sir David Manning, the British Ambassador to the USA. He was very sad it was all over for his posting but maintained the classic British stiff upper lip as you might expect.

He is retiring from a glittering career as a diplomat and the leading advisor to the government on foreign affairs...... but I guess all good things must come to an end. It must also be sad to have to leave the ambassador's residence..... it's got to be one of the finest houses in DC. I heard a little girl incredulous that he would have to leave...... "but where will he get another lovely house like this?" the only response to that would be... where indeed?

Another guest at the party reminisced about a private party Peter Jay, a previous British Ambassador, had held there many moons ago......my friend told me he came across the Ambassador in the garden looking up at the mighty house filled with his personal friends and Jay joked, "What if our parents come back?"...... as if even he had no business having a private party in this mighty palace.....although he was of course the Ambassador and it was "his house".

The new Ambassador starts work around Wednesday believe....... The King is dead! long live the King!

Cheers Jez XX
