Today I went to see the exhibit by at Tate Modern of Edvard Munch's work called 'The Modern Eye'. He is most famous for his work 'The Scream'. A painting that has become one of the of the most iconic images in art. He is no doubt a genius. The work displayed is fantastic even though the show deliberately goes elsewhere and does not include 'The Scream'. Munch was a pretty crazy guy, artist and drinker he occasionally fought with and drew guns on fellow artists and he was also battled extreme melancholy and mental breakdown.

The show groups many versions of paintings together. He returned over and over to certain themes. The death of his young sister in The Sick Child he painted repeatedly. This room above is dedicated to 'The Weeping Woman'. Many versions of her were painted......... Even unusually a statue made as you see above ....... I understand he was making this for his own grave ?

The business of re working the same images again and again ........ Puts me in mind of photographers and their prints......... I think it is a good idea to go back........ and print the old pieces......... re visit........ re work them ......... maybe shoot the same subjects again ......... especially if you have a special connection with that subject or theme ....... go back look again ....... Represent it .......... Keep it with you..........

Munch himself made many photographs some are in the show ........ One of the repeating themes was self portraits............ even in this........ his is a very modern aesthetic as implied by the naming of the show ........... it's certainly worth a peek if you are within striking distance.............
