American sign-age nationwide can be confusing....... but when parking in NYC extreme caution is needed......... one sign will say if you pay the meter you can have two hours.........but another one down the block will override this saying you are not allowed to park there at all between 4-30PM and 6-30PM...... so you always have to walk up and down the whole street and try and gather the information from sometimes three or four separate signs and use them in combination.........delivery parking only.....10AM till 4-00PM.... Mon through Friday........ No Parking 4-00PM till 6-00PM Mon through Sat.......... Drop off only Sunday Church Service 10AM till 11-30 AM........ No parking for street cleaning Tuesday 8-30 AM till 10AM this side..........No parking for street cleaning Friday 9-30 AM till 11-00AM that side.........No parking 4-00AM till 6AM Seven Days...... so can you park or not?......... oh yeah and don't forget alternative side parking?......which is beyond me to explain but I understand involves the gravitational pull exerted by the moon the tidal flow of the Hudson and the East River....... the date of Chinese New Year...... the date of Ede.....and of course Divalli......whether the vehicle is facing East as the sun rises in the equinox of Mars..... mind you thank goodness for the religious tolerance and inclusiveness of NYC........ suspension of alternative side parking in respect of religious festivals...... that I was completely unaware of...... would sometimes save my bacon when I lived in Brooklyn.....
This shot I took in New Jersey today and it shows a classic example of the totem pole of signs approach using many signs all on top of each other but at least this way they are all on the same pole and consequently grouped together which hopefully means you don't need a degree from Princeton to work out how to get there!
