In Kurdistan Saddam Hussien had millions of trees cut down to destroy cover for Kurdish fighters opposing his regime. Add to this the poverty of the people especially back at that time so they were often cutting down trees themselves to stay warm. Overall this left the whole Kurdistan region of Iraq desperately short of trees. Now there is a deliberate attempt to try and return trees to the landscape with policies of planting. Here close to Suliemania this man walks amongst newly planted trees.

Apparently the story I did in Iraqi Kurdistan on the development of its oil industry ran this week in the UK's ST Magazine using a fair few pictures although i cannot find any evidence of this on their website :-)) ........... http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/
