Eugene Richards has been a photojournalist I have admired and been aware of my whole working life....... he is a pure photojournalist......... or social documentary photographer the label he mentioned he was happier with......... he is never working on commercial assignments....... he does work on commissioned stories for magazines....... but only in the areas he is identified with......... his work is always uncomfortable and penetrating....... he does not work in the realm of comfort for most........ I know his work but it is always challenging to look at some of his stories....... there is one image that kills me every time I see it........ from his book the 'Knife and Gun Club' the corpse of the woman who has died on the table of gunshot wounds after medics have battled and failed to save her........... the blooded tools of the medical trade lie strewn about and her naked body is like a piece of trash...... abandoned and alone......... with none of the ritual privacy or respect afforded to the corpse........... It is a truly shocking image.

When I heard he was speaking at Vision 09 organized by the BJP British Journal of Photography............ I thought Id better get myself a ticket......... Although its always hard work to concentrate on some of those pictures............ it was a genuinely inspiring session.
